Let’s Talk About the Root Chakra – Because Safety Isn’t Just a Concept

Let’s Talk About the Root Chakra – Because Safety Isn’t Just a Concept

Ever have one of those weeks where everything feels off? You forget where you put your keys, you can’t focus for more than ten minutes, and your body’s low-key humming with anxiety, like it’s bracing for something even though nothing’s technically wrong?

Last week I messaged someone asking for a meeting ‘tomorrow afternoon at 10am’. I waited in the wrong venue at the retreat centre for a client (only 10 minutes, we fixed it) . I made tea instead of coffee for my mother, and lay awake worrying about something that probably won’t even happen.

That’s a Root Chakra situation.

The Root Chakra (Muladhara) is your energetic foundation. It’s what gives you the feeling of “I’m safe here.” It governs your sense of belonging, physical security, survival, and your connection to the Earth. And when it’s out of alignment, you feel it in your bones — or, more often, in your nervous system.

When I stopped to notice the crazy, and brought awareness to how I was feeling, I realised I felt unsettled about a number of things that shouldn’t bug me. I went outside, lay on the grass and listened to nature. I spent time with the horses. I meditated on connecting to earth. I completed a grounding yoga sequence.

The result was everything settled down and I felt my breath easing. I was able to laugh about the mistakes and the anxiety dissipated. I realised that I was not trusting myself to make a decision that I had been mulling over for weeks.

The brilliant part is that you don’t need to be an energy healer or a yogi to work with the Root Chakra. You just need to be someone who wants to feel more grounded in your body and your life.

Let’s break it down in human terms — and throw in some tools that actually help.

So… what exactly is the Root Chakra?

It sits at the base of your spine, energetically speaking. It’s your anchor to the physical world. The Root Chakra is linked to your basic needs: food, shelter, safety, stability, and trust in life itself. When it’s flowing well, you feel calm. Present. Steady.

When it’s out of balance? You might feel anxious, scattered, disconnected from your body, or chronically overwhelmed. Some people get sick more often. Some go into overdrive trying to control every detail of life. Others just kind of… float away from themselves.

The Root Chakra and Well-Being

You can’t build anything without a foundation. Not a house, not a life, not even a Tuesday that doesn’t unravel by noon.

That’s why working with your Root Chakra is step one in creating real well-being. Not just bubble baths and green juice (though those are lovely), but the kind of well-being that lives in your nervous system.

It is also called the Base Chakra, and this makes so much sense. It sits at the base of the spine, and is also the base which all the other energy systems use as their starting point. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs pyramid gives us a great visual with the bottom foundation layer representing the root chakra.

A regulated Root helps you feel:

  • Safe in your body
  • Able to set boundaries
  • Resilient in chaos
  • Steady in uncertainty
  • More trusting of life

And when you feel safe, you can expand, you can create and you can love.

How to Support Your Root Chakra

This doesn’t need to be complicated. These practices are simple, human, and wildly effective.

1. Yoga for Rooting
A few grounding poses go a long way:

  • Child’s Pose (Balasana) – Safety and surrender
  • Mountain Pose (Tadasana) – Standing strong, claiming your space
  • Malasana (Yogi squat) – Earth connection through your hips and legs
  • Bridge Pose – Activates the legs and grounds the spine

Even just lying on the floor and breathing can do wonders. It brings you back into your body.

2. Meditate Like You’re Planting Yourself
Try a 5–10 minute Root Chakra meditation:

  • Sit comfortably.
  • Take three slow, deep breaths
  • Bring your awareness to your breathing. Notice the rhythm, in and out. In and out.
  • Imagine roots growing from the base of your spine into the earth.
  • With each breath, feel yourself anchored and supported.

Say silently: “I am safe in my body. I belong to the Earth. I am here now.”

  • Stay with this visualisation, exploring within the earth through your roots.
  • When you are ready, slowly retract your roots through all the earth layers until you have drawn them back into your body.
  • Keeping your eyes closed, feel your connection to the earth continue, almost as an echo
  • When you are ready, slowly open your eyes and come back into the room

3. Eat Like You Want to Be Here
Root Chakra loves earthy, grounding foods:

  • Root vegetables (beets, carrots, sweet potatoes)
  • Protein (lentils, eggs, beans)
  • Warm, cooked meals

And eat with your feet on the floor, with presence and gratitude. That’s Root Chakra nourishment too. Try it barefoot sometimes.

4. Walk. Barefoot if You Can.
The most literal way to connect with your Root is through your feet.
Get outside. Touch grass. Walk slowly. Feel your heel strike the earth. Let gravity do its thing.

5. Create Safety Rituals

  • Wrap yourself in a blanket and breathe.
  • Light a candle and say, “I am held.” Feel the rhythm of your breath.
  • Tend your home — clean a corner, declutter a drawer. This is one of the most underrated ways to ground, to feel safe and calm.

These things may seem small. But they signal to your system: “We’re safe now. You can rest.”

In Summary? Grounded Is the Gateway to Glorious.

(I couldn’t resist the alliteration, haha! But it is a true statement!) You don’t have to hustle to feel better. You just need to come back to the base of it all.

That’s where the healing begins and where power starts to grow.

And that’s the magic of your Root Chakra.

No crystals required (unless you’re into that — in which case, hematite and smoky quartz are your friends).

See you outside… in the park, under a tree with my favourite book.
